Notes on the equity section

  • Equity replaces the capital section used for sole traders and partnerships
  • No drawings entry — shareholders receive dividends, not drawings
  • Share capital, share premium, and revaluation reserve must always be positive (credit balances)
  • Retained earnings can be positive or negative (accumulated losses)
  • Non-current liabilities includes debenture loans, mortgages, and long-term bank loans

Calculating number of shares

Ordinary share capital = number of shares × nominal (face/par) value

  • £500 000 of 50p shares → 500 000 ÷ 0.50 = 1 000 000 shares
  • £500 000 of £2 shares → 500 000 ÷ 2.00 = 250 000 shares
