Question

What is a control account? Is it part of the double entry system?

tap to reveal answer

Answer

A control account is a summary account in the general ledger that records the total of all transactions in either the sales ledger or purchases ledger. It is a **memorandum account only** — it is NOT part of the double entry system. It receives totals from books of prime entry, not individual postings.
